The predecessor of Chutung Veterans’ Hospital was the Army’s First Medical Team. On September 1, 1955, the Veterans’ Affairs Commission (VAC) took over administration of the hospital. On March 1, 1957, it was renamed Chutung Veterans’ hospital of Taiwan. In the same year, it was reorganized as a hospital, named Chutung Veterans’ Hospital. On April 1, 1963, it was again renamed Chutung VAC. In 1990, with government approval, its organization was greatly expanded, a considerable number of specialists were recruited, and great new buildings were constructed while old ones underwent renovation. With extensive implementation of modern equipment, Chutung VH is now recognized as one of the best-equipped local hospitals in Taiwan. In the same year, our hospital established a co-operative program with Taipei Veterans’ General Hospital, and the Department of Health credited it as the local general teaching hospital. Located in Hsinchu’s southeastern suburb of Chutung, Chutung Veterans’ Hospital occupies six acres of land with superb views - green mountains behind, and a flowing river in front.
Currently, our hospital is the District Teaching Hospital, and outpatient, medical, ward and administrative buildings have been brought into use one by one since 1987. Current space comes to more than 15,000 ping,; the wards have 860 beds, and there are about 367 employees, which includes 63 doctors, 120 nurses, and 260 other employees.
In medical affairs, there are 18 specialty areas - Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Family Medicine, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Ear Nose and Throat, Dentistry, Nursing, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, Urology, Neurology and, Pharmacy, with a total of 35 specialists, who are involved with the general public and offer special medical treatment under coverage by all types of medical insurance.
There are seven administrative divisions: Office of Medical Affairs (with Information and Insurance offices), Consultation Office (Social Work Office), Office of Personnel, Accounts Office, Office of Nutrition, Secretarial Office and, Office of Ethics.
Statistics indicate the hospital serves approximately 1000 out-patients daily, along with monthly averages of 550 in-patients, 100 baby births, 220 patients who require surgery and almost 600 who receive renal dialysis treatment.
Our hospital is responsible for the health and welfare of veterans’, their dependents and the general public in Hsinchu and Miaoli counties. In addition, it handles the two fundamental tasks of teaching and training. In the future, Chutung VH is positioned as one of the so-called “medical network responsible” hospitals whose services will cover the Hsinchu area and eight townships in the Chutung area.
